Our Growing Practices

“Good Food Grown the Hard Way!”

When we started saying that we grow vegetables the hard way it was entirely in jest; but as we got to thinking about it and talking it over, we decided it was the truth.  Our decisions about growing practices have been guided by our values for what is best for the health of our fields and the consumers.  The “hard way” for us includes the following policies:

No Spray

We choose other ways to solve problems with pests and disease that do not include spraying.  Though there are many pesticide sprays approved for use in certified organic farming, we have yet to find one that does not come with unintended impacts on the rest of the ecosystem, especially bees. Our produce will always be free from synthetic pesticides.

No Chemical Fertilizer or Pesticides

Well fed soil will provide all that plants need to produce the best tasting produce.  We use a combination of manures, legume cover cropping, and compost to provide soil fertility.

No GMOsSeed Catalogs

No varieties that we grow have been genetically modified.  Knowing that there are many GMO corns grown around the world, we are sure to buy our sweet corn seed from suppliers who test their seeds for the presence of GMO materials.

We’re always trying new open pollinated varieties but enjoy some of the advantages of some hybrids too.
